Skin pigmentation disorders can cause changes to the colour of your skin.
Melanin is made by our skins cells and is the pigment responsible for your skin’s colour. It is one of the hardest skin concerns to treat as the melanocyte that produces melanin starts producing pigment every time we get sun exposure.
Pigmentation can be made worse by the use of inappropriate products on the skin. Ingredients such as alcohol in fragrances, dyes in bronzers and cheek colours, continuous sun exposure and heat trauma.
While skin discolouration tends to increase as we get older, there are other factors that can trigger it to become worse. These include:
genetics,
skin type,
sun exposure,
skin injuries like burns from laser or IPL,
hormone imbalance,
pregnancy,
acne,
illness, and
medications.
There are two types of pigmentation.
Hyper-pigmentation is darker in appearance than the rest of the skin on the face/body. Hyper-pigmentation occurs when the melanocytes in the deeper layers of the skin produce a skin-darkening pigment known as melanin. If melanin is over-produced, it may result in darker skin patches appearing on the skin’s surface.
Hypo-pigmentation is whiter/paler than the rest of the skin. Hypopigmentation in skin is the result of loss of melanin production.
If left untreated pigmentation may stay present from 3 months to 2 years. Treatment options can start to fade the discoloration in a single treatment but full results will take longer.
Treatment for pigmentation is making sure you are on the correct products, home rolling brightening serums into the skin are great.
